Tips on How to Stop a Leaking Roof

A leaking roof can damage your property very quickly. You need to do something about it fast. If you don’t know what you need to do though, you have come to the right place.

Protect the Interior

The first thing you need to do is to remove any electronics, valuables, and furniture from the area of damage. Ensure that nothing remains where the water is dripping. Next, you need to place a bucket under the trickling water to minimize the damage to the floor. Remember to keep emptying the bucket before it gets full.

Tarp Up

Place a tarp from inside on the area of the roof which is leaking and nail a wooden board over it to cover the leak. Make sure the tarp is a few extra inches bigger than the damaged area.

Locate and Redirect the Source

The hole on the roof from which the water is coming into the house is often not the main source of the leak. Try to locate from where the water is coming from. Once you have done that, poke a hole near that spot to drain out the accumulated water from your ceiling.

Apply Cement or Roofing Tape

You can apply cement or roofing tape to the damaged area from inside or outside. Both these things are inexpensive and readily available in the market.

Call a Professional:

If the damage is little and temporarily solvable, many people delay calling a roofing expert to fix the problem. However, a single leak on the roof can be a sign of a decaying roof and the problem can quickly escalate to a point where your whole interior is at risk.

Even for a single leak, the solutions you may apply are most likely to be temporary. So, it is best to call a professional who can fix the problem for good and inspect your roof to check if other threatening problems are also present.
